Vogue, Marie Claire, Grazia and Cosmopolitan – They all convey such a blatant message: thin is beautiful. The latest frocks and trends in size 0 seem to give women the idea that if they aren’t that thin, beauty might be far from their reach.

RMIT Fashion Lecturer and PhD candidate Sue Thomas believes otherwise. She strongly argues against the notion that beauty and desirability are related to one’s size.

I seem to have been spot on with my prediction of what the event itself would depict in the prologue to this post: today's fashion is a fusion of those before it, as leading designers sample inspiration from decades of design they identify with most, and integrate it with aspects from others to produce a truly timeless product.

Truthfully, this was my attraction to Fashion Full Stop in the first place: to understand today’s fashion, you must first grasp where it’s borrowing inspiration. Only then can you truly appreciate what’s strutting past you when David Jones rolls out the latest ‘instant fashion’ offerings from its top designers. To which effect, last night’s eclectic extravaganza excelled: because the Today and Tomorrow segment followed on from a nod to our fashion foundations over the ages, it was clear which styles resembled previous segments.

In hindsight, though, I should have seen my downfall coming.

I walked into the venue expecting to be spoon-fed an education on fashion and music over the ages. Not the case. This was a show created by people with an incredibly expert knowledge of fashion, for fashionistas. And the importance of a solid appreciation for fashion's context in today's society hit home during my attempts at reporting on it without it.

Happily, novices such as myself could sit back, enjoy the fantastic musical performances, and take notes to Google when we got home.

So, let’s start from the start:

LMFF FASHION FULL STOP POSTER

Why would any self-respecting Australian want to be anywhere but Melbourne in marvelous March?

Moomba kicked off this weekend, ushered in by showers of- well, moody Melbourne meteorology. Sunny one minute, spittering the next? Sounds like home.

Could've been worse- poor Japan

Bright lights, blaring music, fellow fashionistas pushing through the crowds of shoppers to nab that last pair of Marc Jacobs heels... This, however stereotypical it may be, has become a regular sight inside the modern shopping centre. This is now where countless young, financially-independent and fashion-savvy women come to do their emotional gambling on a day-to-day basis. Yes, gambling for the young has become institutionalised over the past decade or so and has taken the form of “that will come to $43, would you like it gift wrapped?”
