Cut-throat Fashion: My Week at Cosmopolitan Magazine
I've just seen the ultimate fashion wardrobe.
I've mingled with celebrities.
I've rubbed shoulders with the most influential fashion mentors of our time.
I've worked with fashion editors most aspiring fashion writers will only dream of.
Where, you may ask?
I have two words for you.
Cosmopolitan Magazine.
I've come to realise that sexy clothes attract attention. The women working at Cosmopolitan Magazine are testament to this fact. Not only are they goddesses of diverse fashion in their own right, but are like God-sent angels, whose job is to help rescue ordinary women from their wardrobes which lack little, if any style. Bronwyn McCahon, Cosmopolitan's Fashion Editor, declares that her aim is to give women a whole new sense of style and elegance. In my week at Cosmopolitan Magzine, I was able to grasp priceless fashion and style tips, make unbelievable contacts in the fashion industry (seriously, most people would kill for the names I have!) and build working relationships with my fashion mentors, who made my Cosmo experience a week I'll always remember!
When I first walked into the Cosmopolitan building on Monday morning, dressed in my Burberry trench coat, a red vintage dress and Kylie Ryan shoes to complete the ultimate Cosmo look, there was an overwhelming feeling of being envied by every woman passing on the street. Bronwyn McCahon walked through the security doors and welcomed me to join her fellow team members. As I began working on the allotted tasks for the day, I soon realised my Cosmopolitan experience had finally begun. I had to pinch myself that I was actually here – this opportunity I'd been given seemed too good to be true.
The desk in the corner was piled with Cosmopolitan magazines, awaiting my arrival and ready to be re-stacked. Flipping through every dusty page and making detailed notes, Bronwyn McCahon then advised me to write up three articles on health, sex and relationships, and requested it be done before 5 o’clock that evening! I headed straight for my desk and started to frantically write. The other staff couldn’t wait to see my exclusive articles! As I finished my write-ups with five minutes left to breathe, Bronwyn McCahon was thrilled to see what I had written. As I nervously awaited her verdict, I sat down to think of what I had achieved and it was only my first day!
The four days that followed were filled with the daily hustle and bustle associated with the magazine world. I'm talking Devil Wears Prada. Cosmo's fashion department is both diverse and fabulously stylish. Ever new trend you could think of was being worked on for an article, or researched for an upcoming shoot. From patronizing stylists who forced the models to try on various outfits, designer shoes and accessories, to photographers who wouldn't stop the shoot until they got 'that shot', to the various editors instructing their staff to submit their articles on time – I was in the centre of it all. And I loved it. I continued with my duties as real life stories had to be heard, and every morning, a few of my intern-coworkers had to complete the mandatory coffee run, perfectly memorizing six varieties of coffee. The days began to feel shorter as my internship was reaching closer to its end.
On the last day of my internship, I cherished every moment leading up to when I had to walk back through those revolving doors. To my surprise and much delight, Bronwyn McCahon invited me to the most extraordinary cocktail office party ever. As the party started and as I bid farewell to my Cosmopolitan family, I realised how privileged I had been to have worked with such incredible individuals. It was a great night that added glitz and glamour to a one-in-a-lifetime interning week, for which I will be eternally grateful.
