Prada Womenswear Fall 2010
The slightly off-putting saxophone riff provided the perfect backdrop for the girls at Prada to saunter and at times shuffle down the runway, in their spiked kitten heels and contrasting knitted knee-length socks. Sixties secretary appeared to be the theme, with hair up in large beehives held by knitted headbands and some models sporting a very stylized version of horn-rimmed reading glasses.
The first five looks showed black wool in pants, dresses, skirts and coats. Black ruching hemmed all bar the pants, and further ruching highlighted the bust on a tank-top and the latter dress. Black then gave way to a trademark Prada brown and black geometric pattern seen on both top and skirt combinations. This pattern was repeated throughout the show, Prada however substituting different colours for brown including baby-blue and blood-red to best effect.
All looks for the show brought attention to the bust or the hips or both. This was done with cinched waists and a great deal of ruching to make-up for the girls with no bust or to exaggerate the girls already endowed. Cheeky cut-outs underneath the bust on some looks only added to the effect. Skirts were often A-line and dresses ballooned from the waist as did a sublime dress-coat in the richest navy check.
Patterned skirts gave way to tan PVC coats and jackets with shearling collars matched with black PVC skirts. Then the geometry was back on coats and bags in the deepest shades of brown. Australian IT-girl Abbey Lee Kershaw led the first of the thick-woolen jacketed looks in deep navy with a complimenting slate-blue skirt. This was shown in blood-red and black weave coat, dress and cable-knit and skirt combinations, followed by tan, baby-blue and then a black PVC dress with a brown cable-knit cardigan.
For those late evenings, Miuccia offered beautiful black dresses and double-breasted coats with the most intricate of embroidery and finished the collection with the geometric patterned dresses in electric-blue and silver-grey. Australian models Abbey Lee, Miranda Kerr and Catherine McNeil more than held their own against the relatively anonymous cast, but two supermodels Maria Carla Boscono and the amply-bosomed Lara Stone definitely stole the show. The bustier and hippier among Prada fans will certainly enjoy this departure from the size zero waifs who have been storming down Prada’s catwalk for the last handful of seasons.
