Australians love to laugh at themselves, don’t they? Redheads called Bluey, Baldheads called Curly, Michael Clarke named Captain of Australia, giving out names is a humorous Australian tradition. So when a British comedian tells us he had an encounter on a flight from Queensland with something called a “bogan” – we laugh in expectation. Of course we do.

Aindrias de Staic

By Rebekah McDonald

UTTERLY dishevelled and charmingly ridiculous, when Aindrias de Staic bounds onstage, you know you are in for a treat.

When he breaks into song whilst playing the fiddle before even seating himself properly, the night begins to surpass all hopes.

Em O’Loughlin Confesses, “I dropped nine dress sizes!”

Verdict: 7.5/10

EM O’Loughlin might not get the laughs she’s hoping for from Melbourne’s conservative, considerate audiences.

Not because she isn’t funny: she is.

Nor is she offensive, if you can handle a mild dose of swearing in your stand-up.

Our comedy festival audiences can handle jokes about bogans, fatties and relationships gone wrong.

But they’re a little cautious about laughing too loudly when the presenter is the ‘elephant’ in the room.

Or, in this case, was.

Our Princess Is In Another Castle

Video games are a part of everyday life. So why is it essentially non-existent in the world of stand-up comedy except to paint a character as a basement-dwelling man-child? On a completely unrelated note (I swear), Michael Williams' Our Princess Is In Another Castle is, from memory, one of the first comedy festival shows to have an serious gaming bent.

Tony Starr's Kitten Club is an unlikely place to find a comedy show.

Simon Coronel's magic tricks are equally unexpected.

“Let’s get cocking,” is the call a stranger trumpets from the doorway. What would normally draw stares of bewilderment or disgust anywhere else is instead met with rapture by those closest and subsequently a procession of bodies up the wooden staircase in anticipation of the show. However, the performance actually begins before you take your seat.
